Making edible jewelry is a crafty way to double the fun for kids - because they'll enjoy putting their creations together... and then eating what they've made!
To make edible jewelry you will need...
...Any food that you can thread on to a a piece of string, yarn... or an edible 'string' such as shoestring licorice.
Some foods and candy come with the hole already made for you - for example, pretzel twists, Fruit Loops, Cheerios and gummy Lifesavers.
Other foods may need you to make a hole for threading - my kids use a knitting needle (with adult supervision) to push a hole into the food we're using. The hole is then the perfect size!
And this is what makes creating this type of jewelry so much fun... you can choose whatever food your child likes to thread on to it!
Check out the loose candy for sale at your local grocery store...
...anything reasonably soft will do. Pick candy with bright colors to create eye-catching edible necklaces, bracelets or even rings!
Help younger children develop an awareness of patterns...
Get them to thread on one red candy, two yellow ones, one red candy, etc etc. Ask them to come up with their own patterns!
Make healthy edible jewelry...
...by skipping the candy altogether and using plain popcorn, plump sultanas, whole wheat Cheerios, or any other healthy treat your children enjoy!
Entertain children at a birthday party...
...by setting out bowls of foods suitable for threading and letting the kids design their own creations. Add an extra element of excitement by offering a prize for the best one!
